KPC teams garner silver and bronze medals at National Process Troubleshooting Competition

Kenai Peninsula College teams finished second and third in the 2017 National Troubleshooting Competition, April 21-22 at Lone Star College in Atascocita, Tex. The team from the Kenai River Campus (KRC) earned second place, while the Anchorage Extension Site (AES) team finished third. Last year, AES took second place and KRC placed third.
In March, 29 teams from across the country competed for the right to go to nationals. Those teams were narrowed down to eight, and two 3-person teams from AES and KRC advanced from that qualifying round.
Kenai River Campus team: Drew Leonard, Stephen Severson, Joshua Wolf, Linda LaCoe (official presenting trophy), Jeff Laube (coach), assistant professor of process technology.
Jeff Laube, KRC associate professor of process technology, coached the KRC team (known as the Kenai Kings), consisting of Stephen Severson, Drew Leonard and Joshua Wolf.
Rick Adams, AES associate professor of process technology coached the AES team (known as Orso), comprised of Collin Oliver, Willow Schlenker and Josh Bosnjak. Adams coached the No. 1 team (AES) at the 2012 competition.
Anchorage Extension Site team: Collin Oliver, Troy Key (official presenting trophy), Willow Schlenker, Josh Bosnjak, Rick Adams (coach), assistant professor of process technology.
The Alaska Process Industries Careers Consortium (APICC) coordinated the raising of funds for the students and coaches to travel to the competition.
The event was largely sponsored by the North American Process Technology Alliance (NAPTA). Other event sponsors included BASF, Bayport Technical, INEOS, Marathon Petroleum Company, Shell Oil Company, Simtronics, Systran Training & Technical and RISC.
The National Troubleshooting Competition represents a culmination of skills by advanced students in process technology programs from across the country. Troubleshooting is a capstone course for process technology programs. Process technology programs teach operation skills required in industries such as petrochemical, power generation, pharmaceuticals, waste water/water treatment and related fields.
