UAA Career Exploration & Services is offering various career-related events to UAA students and alumni to celebrate National Career Development Month (NCDM). These are opportunities to meet local Anchorage employers as well as UAA alumni, faculty and staff who are genuinely interested in helping you reach your career goals. Check out these events, register early, and take advantage of these free opportunities to expand your knowledge and your career network.

Professionalism & Me Wednesday, Nov. 8, 5:30-7 p.m. Student Union, Room 103 Guest speaker: Ann Kjera, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, chief human resources officer, Anchorage Museum Association

Examine what professionalism means; topics include:

  • Dressing professionally
  • Social media
  • Cultural diversity
  • Stereotyping in the workplace

Branding 101: Managing Your Online Identity Thursday, Nov. 9, 4-5 p.m. Rasmuson Hall, Room 101 Hosted by Career Exploration and Services

Building your personal brand is an important key to your success. What do you bring to the table for employers and how do you want employers to view you? Either you take the lead or your social media will speak for you.

  • 78 percent of recruiters say they search online to find out more about potential employees.
  • 63 percent say they check social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Learn how you can manage and take control of your online reputation and your brand.

UAA Career Networking Night Wednesday, Nov. 15, 5:30-8 p.m. Student Union

Network with local employers and alumni, make new connections, exchange information and gain helpful insights on what it takes to accelerate in a career. Guest will share their career experiences and participate in the speed networking session that evening. Dress professionally and prepare to meet:

Federal Application Workshop Friday, Nov. 17, noon-2 p.m. UAA Main Campus (register for exact location) Hosted by BLM Representatives

There are currently more than 150 open federal civilian positions in Alaska. Find out from a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) representative what the organization is looking for in your resume and application. Federal resumes are different from private sector resumes. Come learn how to be competitive and gain the most advantage no matter what career field you are interested in. You will learn:

  • Effective ways to navigate USAJOBS.gov
  • Different resume formats and how you know which one is right for you
  • How to write strong bullets
  • How to write a federal cover letter
