Dalee Sambo Dorough chairs plenary session at 2017 Arctic Circle Assembly

Associate Professor of Political Science Dalee Sambo Dorough, Ph.D., moderated and presented on the panel "North meets South: Indigenous Arctic-Global Dialogue" during a plenary session of the fifth annual Arctic Circle Assembly held Oct. 13-15, in Reykjavík, Iceland. The 2017 Assembly brought together over 2,000 participants from more than 60 countries. She is responsible for the subfield of International Relations in the UAA Department of Political Science.

The discussion addressed Indigenous knowledge in the context of climate change policies and action, including operationalizing a Platform for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities as established by the Paris Agreement. On Sept. 11-12, 2017, she was the co-facilitator along with Larry Hegan of Environment and Climate Change Canada of an informal dialogue on the elements of the Platform, which was held in Ottawa.

More recently, Sambo Dorough raised funds for UAA political science students Moira Phyala and Nate Graham to attend this month's Model Arctic Council hosted by the prestigious MGIMO Institute in Moscow, Russian Federation.

Up next, Sambo Dorough will deliver the keynote presentation at The Role of Non-Arctic States/Actors in the Arctic Legal Order-Making, an international symposium at Kobe University in Japan Dec. 7-9.
