UAA student Anita Laulainen designed Alaska's newest license plate. The plate, which showcases a landscape of spruce, mountains and aurora, will be available starting next year as the state's first official "artistic license plate."

A competition to create the new license plate opened earlier this year and drew about 140 submissions from around Alaska. Laulainen's design was one of five selected for public voting. More than 17,000 Alaskans cast their votes during the competition, with Laulainen's art plate emerging as the winner.

The plate will be produced for the next four years, after which the state plans to hold another competition for the next art plate. Proceeds from the plate sales will benefit state arts programs.
