Newly improved Library Plaza bus stop will re-open in early October

UPDATE: The re-opening of the Library Plaza bus stop has been postponed until later in October. An exact date will be announced shortly.

This summer, the Municipality of Anchorage began work to improve and expand the bus stop in front of the UAA/APU Consortium Library. Work on the project is expected to conclude for winter no later than Oct. 7. At that time, the municipality will close the temporary bus stop and people may begin using the new bus stop.

The redesigned bus stop is part of a larger effort to improve pedestrian safety in the University and Medical (U-Med) District, particularly at the heavily-used intersection of Alumni Drive and Providence Drive. Upgrades completed over the summer include:

  • New landscaped walls and sidewalks on the Library Plaza to re-route pedestrian traffic toward crosswalks for improved safety.
  • Updated crosswalks at intersection of Alumni Drive and Providence Drive to meet ADA standards.
  • Modified islands for both Alumni Drive and Providence Drive to aid turning movements in and out of campus.

As part of this summer's work, the municipality relocated utilities to allow for construction of a new transit shelter. The shelter will be built starting next spring (approximately mid-May) and should be complete by mid-June. More details will be posted to the Green & Gold and UAA Facilities blog closer to the project start date.
