UAA faculty presenting at North x North Arctic Research Summit - May 2, 2019

The Anchorage Museum is hosting the North x North Summit and Festival May 1-5, 2019. The third-annual event features five days of conversations, workshops, exhibitions, performances, presentations, music, dance, installations, food, film and experiences highlighting Northern people, landscapes and cultures.

The event continues tomorrow, May 2, with the Anchorage Arctic Research Summit from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Anchorage Museum atrium and auditorium. UAA Chancellor Cathy Sandeen will provide opening remarks; and UAA faculty will participate in and facilitate most of the day's panel discussions.

  • From 9:45-10:30 a.m., Diane Hirshberg, professor of education policy, UAA Institute of Social and Economic Research, will facilitate a panel discussion on Arctic Economic Security. Panelists include: Philippe Amstislavski, associate professor of public health, UAA Department of Health Sciences; and Steve Colt, professor emeritus of economics, UAA Institute of Social and Economic Research, affiliate researcher, Alaska Center for Energy and Power.
  • From 11:15 a.m.-Noon, Douglas Causey, professor, UAA Department of Biological Sciences, principal investigator, Arctic Domain Awareness Center, will facilitate a panel discussion on Arctic Environmental Security. Panelists include: Herminia Din, professor, UAA Department of Art; Tom Ravens, professor, UAA Department of Civil Engineering; and Anita Moore Nall, postdoctoral fellow, UAA Department of Health Sciences.
  • From Noon-1 p.m., Nelta Edwards, associate professor, UAA Department of Sociology, will participate in the lunchtime panel discussion, Gender and Research in the North.

North x North runs through May 5 at the Anchorage Museum. Weekend programming includes more than a dozen engaging talks and interactive activities centered around innovation, climate, gender, re-use and repair, food, music, indigenizing and earthquakes.
