June 14, 2019: Arbor Day (belated) and Tree Campus USA celebration

by Michelle Saport  |

UAA has been recognized as a Tree Campus USA for the 10th consecutive year. Come celebrate this honor and a belated Arbor Day at a volunteer tree-planting event on Friday, June 14, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Meet southeast of ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building (CPISB). Tools will be provided.

Volunteers will help plant three large Japanese lilac trees as well as several birch and spruce seedlings. Get outside and be a part of something that will beautify and environmentally improve campus for posterity. Certified arborists and campus landscapers will guide volunteers through the tree-planting process and answer any questions.

The Arbor Day Foundation awards the annual Tree Campus USA recognition to two- and four-year institutions that meet five standards.

"It speaks volumes that the university supports this voluntary certification," said horticulture crew member Kara Monroe. "It allows UAA to be one of the premiere places in Southcentral Alaska for people to learn about and enjoy a huge variety of tree species. We're proud of that fact and hope to continue those education and landscaping efforts for years to come."
