The Boren Scholarships representative from Washington, D.C. will be visiting UAA on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, and we would like to invite faculty, students and staff to join us in the University Honors College lounge (Rasmuson Hall, Room 115) to welcome him.

Tuesday, Nov. 5:

  • 11:20 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. - Crafting a competitive application I
  • Noon to 1 p.m. - Pizza and individual consultations
  • 2:20 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. - Crafting a competitive application II

The Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide merit-based funding of up to $20,000 for undergraduate and graduate students seeking to study languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests such as Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Boren Awards require rigorous language study, and the majority of awardees spend a full academic year abroad. In exchange for funding, Boren Award recipients commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation. Boren Award recipients are committed to public service and aspire to working in positions critical to U.S. national security throughout the federal government, including the departments of State, Defense, Homeland Security and USAID.

Boren scholars and fellows study a wide range of critical languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese and Swahili. Boren Awards are available to students of all proficiency levels who are committed to enhancing their skills.

Eligibility:

  • Be a U.S. citizen at the time of the national application deadline.
  • Propose an overseas program of study in a country outside of Western Europe, Australia, Canada or New Zealand.
  • Propose to study in a country of which they are not a citizen.
  • Be matriculated in an undergraduate or graduate program within the U.S. for the duration of their Boren Awards-funded program and accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • For ROTC cadets and midshipmen and members of the military Reserves or National Guard, be in inactive, non-drilling status for the duration of their Boren Awards-funded program.
  • In addition, preference will be given to programs based on their duration, focus on intensive study of a preferred language in a preferred country, and applicant's field of study.
