NWCCU Responds to University Board of Regents, President, Chancellors

Dear UAA Community,

I am so pleased to let you know the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) has responded favorably to the letter sent earlier this week by University of Alaska Board of Regents Chair John Davies, myself and my fellow Chancellors White and Caulfield. In our response to the NWCCU's original letter sent in late September, we addressed concerns regarding the appropriate division of authority and responsibility between the statewide office and UAA, UAF and UAS as separately accredited universities, and the need to demonstrate shared governance and inclusive processes in critical decisions.

The letter from NWCCU President Sonny Ramaswamy stated: "It is clear that the Board of Regents, system office, and institutions are moving forward collectively to clarify the roles and responsibilities throughout the system. You are also creating opportunities for inclusive dialogue regarding the future structure of the University of Alaska System as you develop a path forward to solve the funding and enrollment challenges that threaten the state's institutions of higher learning."

This is affirming and means we are on the right track. We will continue to take the concrete steps necessary to address NWCCU's concerns. As always, please know I will continue to keep you informed.

Sincerely, Cathy Sandeen UAA Chancellor
