Presenters:
- Bridget Coffou, Prevention Education Coordinator, Title IX, Office of Equity and Compliance
- Adeline Schlabaugh, Lab Coordinator and Term Instructor, Department of Chemistry
Description:
UAA’s Office of Equity and Compliance is the new home for SafeZone Ally trainings,
sessions that provide an opportunity to learn about LGBTQ+ identities, gender and
sexuality, and examine prejudice, assumptions, and privilege. Sessions provide a way
to advance a more inclusive and equitable educational experience for the entire university
community. Last year, in his capacity as chair of the Campus Climate Committee, Paul
Landen noted that “LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff are simply invisible at UAA.
LGBTQ+ students feel as if there is no place for them. We as an institution do not
talk about LGBTQ+ issues. That needs to change, and we encourage the Chancellor and
Cabinet to take the lead in changing that.” This year’s Campus Climate Committee is
actively working to increasing supports and visibility for LGBTQ+ students, faculty
and staff, and SafeZone trainings are a part of that.
