A democracy is always a work in progress. The work of democratic life-solving shared problems, shaping policy, enacting change, making grievances heard--relies on participation of the body politic and healthy interaction between elected leaders and citizens. The body politic relies on people willing to engage in governing.

In the interest of designing a healthy future for our democracy, this year’s essay contest invites you to speak to the following questions:

  1. What are the vital signs of a healthy democracy?
  2. How can citizens support a system that grants people the power to shape their own futures?

Submission deadline: Sept. 10 by 5 p.m.
Length: 500-750 words
