UAA celebrates Juneteenth 2021
by Green & Gold News |
*In light of considerable feedback from the community and after careful thought and
deliberation from our planning team and Juneteenth Anchorage, we have decided to postpone
the June 17 viewing of Boyz n the Hood until July.
When we publicized the event, it became clear that while individuals appreciate the
film and its importance, Juneteenth should be a time to celebrate the black community
and civil rights successes. Therefore, we plan to postpone the film until July and
include a paneled discussion to underscore its relevance and intent. We will keep
what we have learned in mind for future Juneteenth events.
For individuals wishing to celebrate Juneteenth this week, please consider joining
us for the Juneteenth Anchorage Celebration.

2021 marks the 30th anniversary of the film that was a critical and commercial success
praised for its emotional weight, acting, and writing. It was nominated for Best Director
and Best Original Screenplay at the 64th Academy Awards, making John Singleton the
youngest person and the first African-American to be nominated for Best Director.
In 2002, it was deemed “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” by
the Library of Congress and selected for the National Film Registry.
We hope to see you at one of the many Juneteenth Anchorage Events!
