UAA offers flat-rate tuition for military students

In February, UAA was recognized with the Military Friendly School® distinction. This marks the 13th consecutive year UAA has earned this distinction, and for good reason.
This fall, UAA is making a flat $250 per undergraduate credit hour tuition rate available for any active duty, reserves and national guard members. For students using Armed Forces tuition assistance, it means their courses and some fees will now be fully covered.
"This new rate is so important because it makes higher education more affordable for our military service members and will help them to successfully complete their degree program on time with minimal out-of-pocket costs," said Peter Clemens, UAA Military and Veteran Student Services program director.
Lindsey Chadwell, interim associate vice chancellor for enrollment services, said approximately 500 active duty military members at JBER currently use tuition assistance through other universities offering this flat rate. “This shift represents an opportunity to attract and welcome more military service members to UAA, their local institution, where we can support them as they further their educational goals,” said Chadwell.
This summer, UAA also allowed Army service members using tuition assistance to take courses for free, following the Army’s announcement that assistance would be unavailable due to delays in the rollout of the federal tuition assistance system. These changes represent just a few of the many opportunities for veterans and Armed Services members at UAA. Potentially a result of these and other targeted efforts, UAA is seeing a 30% increase in fall semester applications from military and veteran students compared to this time last year.
“These changes are motivated by a desire to make an undergraduate education at UAA more accessible for our Armed Forces members, which aligns perfectly with UAA’s long-held military-friendly values,” said Chadwell.
The application deadline for the fall 2021 semester is July 15. Visit uaa.alaska.edu/apply for more information.
