Dr. Melanie Hulbert selected as new vice provost for student success & dean of Honors College

by Denise Runge, UAA Provost  |

Dear faculty and staff,

After a successful national search, I am so pleased to announce that Dr. Melanie Hulbert has been selected as the new VPSS and Dean of Honors. She will start her position July 17. Dr. Hulbert has been the VPSA for Lees-McRae College in North Carolina, and before that served at Western Colorado. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology, an M.S. in Women's Studies, a certificate in women and public policy, and a B.A. in a combined major of sociology and psychology.

As chair of the University Retention, Graduation and Data Analytics Committee at Western, Melanie was charged to increase retention by 5% over a five-year period. In response she implemented, among other strategies:

  • A comprehensive early alert system.
  • The implementation of Complete College America "Game Changers" to improve student success, retention and on-time graduation rates.

I want to also offer my sincere gratitude to the members of the VPSS Search committee, as well as to everyone who helped to organize and participate in the process.

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Dr. Hulbert to Alaska and to this position.

Warm regards,
Denise Runge
UAA Provost
