Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference abstracts due Jan. 30

by Green & Gold News  |

A call for abstracts for the Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference has been issued. Abstracts are due by Jan. 30.

Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference. Hosted by Alaska Sea Grant, University of Alaska Fairbanks. Narratives from a resilient coast: Science, story, and shared knowledge

The Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference will highlight ways to sustain strength, health, and subsistence lifestyles during a time of rapid change across Western Alaska, prioritizing the ongoing exchange of knowledge across cultures.

We anticipate that the ongoing recovery from ex-Typhoon Halong will shape this year’s conversation, and we encourage proposals that speak to storm recovery and community preparedness. Other topics are still welcome.

We are asking for submissions for oral and poster presentations drawn from all disciplines that address questions and issues of concern to Western Alaska communities.

Session themes will include:

  • cultural heritage and knowledge systems
  • ecosystem health and resilience
  • community and public health
  • sustainable energy and resource development
  • social science and community perspectives
  • environmental monitoring and management

Since 2008, WAISC has brought together rural and urban scientists, traditional knowledge holders, educators, students, leaders, and community members to discuss science, research, and issues relevant to Western Alaska.

To join the WAISC mailing list, email sea.grant@alaska.edu.  For questions, contact Katie Basile at kebasile@alaska.edu,  Alaska Sea Grant, UAF Kuskokwim Campus.
