An evening with Vieux Farka Touré at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium, Nov. 13

UAA will present an evening with Vieux Farka Touré at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium on Nov. 13.

Biography

Vieux Farka Touré, "The Hendrix of the Sahara", was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. Son of the beloved Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré, Vieux is prominent in his own right - initially a drummer/calabash player, he secretly began playing guitar in 2001. Since then, Vieux has toured the world and recorded numerous albums to great acclaim, including Les Racines - translated to 'the roots' - a return to the desert blues roots of Touré's father, and Ali on Dead Oceans - reinterpretations of his father's songs released as a collaboration with Khruangbin. The album was an instant hit around the globe, getting millions of streams and even earning the praise of Sir Elton John, who called it "absolutely wonderful music."

As a passionate champion for the people of Mali and the Sahel, Vieux founded Amahrec Sahel in 2012. As part of the charity's mission to support humanitarian reconstruction and culture, they have provided school supplies, supported an orphanage in Bamako, and provided instruments for young musicians in Mali. Vieux is also the director of The Ali Farka Touré Foundation, an international organization dedicated to the preservation of Ali's legacy and the cultural growth of Mali.
