The meaning of MLK Day

MLK Day: A day on, not a day off! Remember! Celebrate! Act!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister and activist who led the civil rights movement of the '50s and '60s. MLK Day, the only holiday celebrating an African-American was designated in 1986 and turned into the only national day of service in 1994. It is now the only national day of service and is known as a "day on, not a day off." Dr. King was an advocate for non-violence, equity and service to the community. By celebrating Dr. King's legacy as a day on, not a day off, we can continue his work to bring empowerment and betterment to our fellow Alaskans.
