UAA Music programs foster excellence in the preparation of music students for graduate school, teacher training or other careers in music. Music faculty and programs also serve as an important community resource in the training of pre-college talent. The Department seeks to serve the lifelong learning component of the university mission in by offering the community access to opportunities for continuing education.

    Mic Check: Jonathan Heynen

    He was classically trained right here in Alaska. Folk and alternative singer-songwriter Jonathan Heynen recently graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage where he studied classical guitar. His inspiration to write and perform started eight years ago after a visit to a music festival in Juneau. (Read More)
  • Mischa Shimek

     Mic Check: Mischa Shimek


    Mischa Shimek is a music major who attends the University of Alaska Anchorage. When he’s not focusing on his studies, he can be found playing at the Anchorage Lutheran Church and Organic Oasis. Friday, he joined Daybreak for a Mic Check in the morning where he played two pieces on his classical guitar.   • Edvinas Minkstimas

    World-Class Musician

    “Piano is such a rich instrument. It enables you to play anything from Beatles to Bach,” he said. “It’s like having an orchestra at your finger tips.”

    Minkstimas has been playing since he was four years old. He’s classically trained but dabbles in a bit of everything.

    “I’m working on including music from video games and movies because they’re relevant,” he said, as he finished playing the iconic “Peanuts” theme song. “That’s the time we live in and it’s wonderful because there are so many ways music reaches people and listeners.” (Read More)
