2022 CAS Celebration of Students
On April 22nd in ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building, the College of Arts and Sciences hosted the inaugural CAS Celebration of Students. At this event, CAS honored one student from every department with a $1000 scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year. These students were selected by their respective departments in recognition of their academic excellence.
At the event, CAS Dean McNulty opened the ceremony, and discussed the accomplishments of the selected students. The college recognized students like Haley Duryea, a junior pursuing her B.A. in Psychology who is currently on a research team that studies isolation and loneliness in older adults and the effects of COVID with suggestions on how to improve well-being; Preston Weeks, a junior pursuing his B.A. in Geological Sciences, who was selected for an internship with an Anchorage-based geophysical consulting firm; and, Christine Castro, a senior pursuing her B.A. in Anthropology who in 2020, assisted with the faunal analysis for the Chernofski Village Harbor Site in the Aleutian Islands with Cultural Resource Consultants (CRC) in Anchorage.
UAA Chancellor Sean Parnell who attended the event, had this to say, “The CAS inaugural event celebrating CAS students' academic excellence was truly remarkable! Thank you to the College and to the departments for contributing to the students' scholarships. Thank you, as well, to the faculty who taught and nominated these outstanding students. This showcase of student achievements is something we will work to replicate across UAA. The reception afterward provided another entirely rewarding time of engagement as we celebrated the students' achievement and met them and their loved ones. Great job!"
Dean McNulty states, “I am amazed by the talents of our students, the dedication of our staff, and the inspiration of our faculty. I want to thank the faculty and staff that support our students, as well as our generous donors who contribute to our excellence funds that make these scholarships possible.” It was wonderful to be able to honor these top students at an in-person event and share this celebration with their families and friends.
